2019 #12: HoDaLa, Taiwanese Asian Fusion Restaurant (FOOD REVIEW)

For my birthday this year, I told my hubby bear that I just wanted a simple birthday brunch with him since we were exhausted coming back home from our first trip of the year this month. I asked my hubby bear where should we go that we have not been to. At first, I wanted to go to a tea house where they serve teas and brunch meal, but I remember he suggested that we should go to this Taiwanese Restaurant in the city that one of his co-workers went to.

I was a little bit hesitant at first because I already have my favorite Taiwanese restaurant that I loved to go to in Oakland but at the same time, I was curious about this restaurant if it will deliver the same featured of food that I loved from my go-to place of Taiwanese Restaurant.

Location: Geary Blvd (between 23 ave and 22nd ave)

The first thing I notice from the outside of the restaurant is this Star War's Stromtrooper wearing some kind of traditional dress. I found it so cute when we were about to go inside the restaurant.

Appetizer: Deep Fried Popcorn Chicken

My thoughts: It might look dry on the outside, but it was definitely tender on the inside. I love dipping the fried chicken to the sriracha and mayo aioli.

My hubby bears thought: On the other hand my husband said that he loved the honey mustard sauce inside of the spicy one. He said the taste of the fried chicken was a classic taste of popcorn chicken from Taiwan.

Hubbybear's dish: Pork belly over rice

His thoughts: He said the pork belly was amazing and it was just the right amount of meat to fat ratio. The pork belly melts in your mouth.

My dish: Minced Braised Beef over Rice

My thoughts: The dish was okay. I still prefer my favorite Taiwanese Restaurant than this one. I was a little bit disappointed about the egg because I was expecting it to be a soft-boiled egg and what I got was an overcooked boiled egg.

Extra Dish: Pork and Cabbage Dumpling

My thoughts: The dumplings were really delicious. I was surprised and I did not expect that it will turn out to be a delicious dish. The filling of the pork and cabbage was actually not overwhelming and it balances the dumpling wrap.

Extra Dish: Pork belly Bao

My thoughts: The pork belly was tender like the pork belly over rice but I tasted a better version of pork belly bao before. I feel like there is a missing ingredient inside the bao.

The service was actually good. The waitress checks up on us a couple of times if we were doing okay. The price range was reasonable. It will not break your bank if you ask me.

It was just us (my hubby bear and I) and another group of people in the table, so everything was nice and clean when we went inside. Plates and serving chopsticks are in order. The location is in the heart of Geary blvd where there is a lot of Asian Cuisine Restaurant and it's always busy on the weekend. We found a parking two blocks away from the restaurant, so expect that it will be hard for you guys to find parking around the area.

Overall, HoDala Restaurant gives you that homely feeling where people can relax and reminisces with toys and candies that you liked when you were once a child. I will definitely go back here if I am craving for some dumplings and Taiwanese fried chicken as well.

Hubbybear and I agreed that our favorite dish of them all :
👍Deep Fried Popcorn Chicken 👍

and our least favorite dish of them all :
👎Braised Beef over rice👎

Well that's all for now...

Where should we go next????

HASTA LA~PASTA!

Until next time,
