2019 #7: CASSAVA SF (FOOD REVIEW)

I remember when my hubbybear and I just started dating and he used in the Outer Richmond District Area of San Fran, I always see this modern looking restaurant inside and it was always busy outside the patio as well. Back then, when I go to my hubbybear's old house I look forward to get boba drinks from Purple Kow and Cassava SF was always been back on my mind, wondering what kind of food they serve there. Majority of the people who eats there was Caucasian and not a lot of Asian, so I always assume it might be American Fusion type of restaurant.

And as years gone by and Instagram was becoming more of a platform for some small local restaurant to advertise their Restaurant and reach more future consumers, I saw Cassava SF instagram page as a suggested page of mine. I was happy to see them and check out their menu and the food they serve. You guys want to guess what kind of food they serve?

Cassava serves Modern California cuisine in a neighborhood setting. Mostly known for Japanese Breakfast, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, 4 Course Tasting Menu, Maple Ricotta Liége Waffle. Recognized for great wine list including high end sake and vermouth cocktails. Weekday is counter service where you order with a cashier. Nightly dinner and weekend brunch is by table service. Anyway back to the night we went to Cassava...

To celebrate our 40th monthsary or 4 months of being a married couple. I got my husband and I a reservation to try the food they served in Cassava

We had the FOUR COURSE TASTING MEAL for $40 per guest.

We were seated outdoors and we got the best view:  the open kitchen where they cook and plate the food we were served in.

But before we started with our four course meal, we ordered extra appetizer..

Cassava's Buttermilk Fried Chicken

sous-vide chicken thigh with jalapeno aioli.

My thought's: The crispy chicken was so delicious that I was tempted to order for second set of order but I told myself not to because they are more food coming our way that night.

Hubbybear's thought: He said he can taste the chicken being like a free-range chicken without hormone added on it. He loved the jalapeno aioli with it.

⇓ First course of the meal ⇓

Arugula and Poached Beets Salad

[ blood orange, marinated fromage blanc, molassesdijon dressing, smoked almonds ]

My thoughts : I always love eating arugula, some people might not like that pepper taste-like but I do. I loved the beets and arugula combination.

Hubbybear's thoughts : He likes arugula as well but does not love the combination of beets and arugula in a salad.

Baja Striped Bass

[ buckwheat spaetzle, celery root - apple velouté, maitake ]

My thoughts : I loved the crispiness of the fish's skin and the fish was so moist and tender. I just food that melts inside my mouth.

Hubbybear's Thoughts : He loved the taste of the fish when you eat it with celery mash potatoes.

Superior Farms Lamb Chop

[ sunchoke, basil pesto, radish greens, hedgehog mushroom ]

My thoughts : The lamb has a little bit of gamey taste in it but other than that I loved the pesto sauce with the potatoes.

Husband's Thoughts: Same as the fish dish, taste good and even better if you deep it in the pesto sauce

Black Sesame Panna Cotta

[ apple butter with fresh berries ]

My thoughts: As a dessert lover, I was expecting it to be sweet and I was a bit disappointed about it. Personally, I am a big fan of black sesame in general but the combination of it on a panna cotta is not my kind of dessert. I will stick with my black sesame ice cream if I wanted a dessert.

Hubbybear's thoughts : It was too bitter and didn't really go well with the previous course. It is my least favorite meal of all the food we ate.

The service was excellent. Our food arrived in each course meal was on point. Our waiter that night was lovely and keeping in check with us in our table. The price point of the meal was fair because of San Francisco Restaurant Week event and the food was great. I love how they can keep up with the orders in the back of the house and they manage to be organized after

My hubbybear and I argeed that the best meal we had on Cassava SF was the second course of all the meals : BAJA STRIPPED BASS 👍

and our least favorite was the last course of meal :
Black Sesame Panna Cotta 👎

You guys should check out their official page and ig page as well.
