2025 #49 : Essence of Joy 🌱13 | Souvenirs I got from our Shanghai Trip

Shanghai Souvenirs: Tiny Treasures with Big Stories

Even though we only spent three nights and four days in Shanghai, we made the most of every moment—especially when it came to shopping. Between temple visits, dumpling tastings, and navigating the city’s electric pulse, we carved out time to explore both bustling street markets and sleek department stores. And let me tell you: Shanghai knows how to charm you into filling your suitcase.

Souvenir hunting wasn’t just about buying things—it was about collecting memories. I’ll be sharing a few of the treasures we brought back—gifts thoughtfully chosen for family, friends, and even a few of my husband’s co-workers. Whether it was delicate tea sets, silk scarves, or quirky snacks you can’t find stateside, each item carried a little piece of our journey. Some were wrapped with care and given with a story; others were tucked into carry-ons as sweet surprises. It’s amazing how a small token from a faraway place can spark connection and conversation long after the trip ends.

Skincare Finds Worth the Flight

Shanghai’s beauty scene is no joke. I picked up a few skincare products that had been on my radar thanks to local recommendations and glowing reviews. Think hydrating serums infused with pearl extract, sheet masks that feel like a spa in a pouch, and toners with herbal blends that smell like a walk through a Chinese apothecary. These weren’t just impulse buys—they were part of my self-care ritual, now infused with the memory of neon-lit nights and quiet mornings in the city.

Cookies with a Cultural Crunch

Shanghai cookies were a surprise hit. These aren’t your average butter biscuits—they’re often infused with flavors like sesame, red bean, or matcha, and come in beautifully designed tins that feel like keepsakes themselves. I brought back a few boxes for family and friends, and they were gone in days. There’s something about sharing a snack from another country that makes people lean in, curious and delighted.

🐰White Rabbit Nostalgia πŸ‡

White Rabbit products were a must. If you grew up with the iconic creamy candy wrapped in edible rice paper, you know the nostalgia hits hard. But Shanghai takes it further—there are White Rabbit lotions, lip balms, and even scented candles. I grabbed a few for my husband’s co-workers, and they were instantly intrigued. “Wait, this smells like candy?” Yes. It does. And it’s glorious.

The Infamous Shanghai Lotions 🧴

Now, let’s talk about the Shanghai Lotions. These are the kind of cult products you hear whispers about—only available locally, often passed down through generations. I picked up a few bottles, each with its own distinct scent and purpose. One was cooling and minty, perfect for post-sun care. Another had a floral undertone that reminded me of the gardens we strolled through. They’re simple, affordable, and somehow magical. I wish I had bought more.

Sharing some Goodie Bags with some friends.

And of course, we couldn’t possibly keep all the souvenirs to ourselves. So I decided to share the joy by giving some away to a few of my close friends. This is one of the sample bags I gifted—it’s a little bundle of memories from our trip, thoughtfully curated with love.

There’s something so special about giving souvenirs. It reminds me of the feeling you get when handing out Christmas presents, except it’s just an ordinary day made extraordinary by the act of sharing. Each bag I gave was customized with intention, carefully chosen based on what I know that person would appreciate and enjoy. Whether it was a quirky trinket, a snack we discovered in Shanghai, or a small keepsake, I wanted every item to feel personal.

I genuinely love the feeling of sharing—especially when it’s tied to a trip my husband and I truly enjoyed. Our short getaway to Shanghai was filled with laughter, discovery, and little moments that made us pause and smile. Passing on pieces of that experience to others felt like extending the joy beyond ourselves. It’s not just about the souvenirs—it’s about the stories they carry and the connections they deepen.
