🦋 Weekend Wonder: Our First Visit to Happy Hollow Park & Zoo in San Jose 🦙
Around April of this year, we decided to take another weekend family trip—one we hoped would spark joy and create new memories for our toddler to hold onto. As parents, those little moments of discovery matter to us. We want him to grow up not only surrounded by love, but also by experiences that help him see the world beyond his tiny, ever-curious bubble.
For this adventure, we chose Happy Hollow Park & Zoo in San Jose, and it was our very first visit. My husband’s coworker had spoken highly of it after enjoying the park with their own family. Their recommendation came with a list of helpful tips and even a few restaurant suggestions nearby, including their favorite go-to spot for post-zoo snacks. That kind of insider info is gold when you’ve got a toddler in tow.
I’ll admit—whenever we plan to explore new places, I get anxious. It’s not something I outwardly show, but unfamiliar environments can feel overwhelming. The crowds, the layout, the unknowns—they all swirl around in my head. But despite that, I always remind myself of the bigger goal: giving my toddler a chance to experience the world in new and exciting ways.
🌟 Toddler-Sized Joy in a Big, Beautiful Space
From the moment we walked into the zoo, our little one was completely captivated. His eyes widened with every furry face, every splash of water, and every colorful ride around the corner. The petting zoo section was a total hit. He giggled while gently brushing the goats and kept reaching out to every animal like they were long-lost friends.
The space was safe, welcoming, and perfectly designed for small kids. It gave him a chance to interact, explore, and experience tactile joy—with me just a few steps behind, heart bursting.
🎢 Unexpected Thrills: Our Little Adventurer on Big Boy Rides
When it came to the rides, we assumed our toddler would gravitate toward the kiddie ones—the gentle spins and colorful mini trains that seemed tailor-made for his age. But to our surprise, he proved to be a little thrill seeker in disguise.
He found several of the solo kiddie rides underwhelming. We'd watch him sitting there, expression blank and barely amused, as if silently evaluating the entertainment value and deciding, “Not worth it.” His body language said it all—leaning on the edge, fidgeting, sometimes even glancing around as if counting the seconds until it was over. It was funny and slightly baffling, considering we thought those were the rides that would light him up.
What truly captured his joy were the “big boy rides”—the ones that made our adult hearts skip a beat. Our last stop of the day was the modest but exciting roller coaster, and it was a moment I won’t forget. He rode alongside his dad, tightly buckled in, looking equal parts curious and cautious as they took off.
We were holding our breath, unsure how he’d react. Would he scream? Cry? Panic halfway through?
But nope. By the second loop, he was giggling—pure, belly-laugh joy—clutched safely in his dad’s arms, hair a bit tousled and face absolutely radiant. It was one of those moments where you realize your child isn’t just growing—he’s evolving into someone brave, bold, and full of unexpected spirit.
✨️FINAL THOUGHTS💭
Despite my initial nervousness about navigating an unfamiliar park, I found myself relaxing as the day went on. Happy Hollow had peaceful walking paths, plenty of shaded rest areas, and clean, accessible amenities, which, for parents, makes all the difference. More importantly, it reminded me that sometimes stepping into the unfamiliar can bring the most memorable rewards.
We left the park tired, slightly sun-kissed, and completely full—of happiness, that is. Our toddler was clutching a small stuffed animal from the zoo shop, his cheeks flushed from smiling all day. And in that moment, watching him in the rear seat softly humming to himself while drifting off, I whispered, This is why we go.
Even when it’s new. Even when it’s scary. Even when we’re tired.
